About the Collections

Compass Rose

This collection captures the symmetrical beauty and intrigue of the compass rose. Developed in the classical age and refined into the mediaeval period, the compass rose was a device driven by the winds and fixed by the stars, designed to help sailors chart the cardinal and ordinal directions as they navigated the seas.

The foundational grouping of this series comprises a quatrefoil of precious metal rings overlain by a central ring and bordered by a diamond-shaped frame. Hand-fabricated of precious metals, the bracelets and necklaces feel like lace in the hand and on the skin.  The "Sunspot" and "Solar Flare" groupings feature the frames and cardinal points of the compass rose in precious metals with stylized 18K gold representations of the sun.

Natura

Inspiration for this collection originates with De Rerum Natura (Lucretius, 55 BC) and the fabulous botanical illustrations that began in the ancient world with De Materia Medica (Pedanius Dioscorides, 70 A.D.) and continued until the advent of photography. These illustrations catalogued myriad species of plants and provide amazing glimpses into plants of the ancient world. This collection represents various flora and fauna, as well as natural phenomena, such as lightning strikes and rain drops.

Musica

This collection draws inspiration from the "music of the spheres", a philosophical tenet that began in ancient Greece and was embraced through the end of the Renaissance. Essentially, it held that all celestial bodies (the sun, the stars, the planets and the moon) exist in harmonious relation of proportion and movement to each other. That marriage of form and movement, in turn, expresses itself as music that resonates through the world and can be heard by the soul. Mary's collection features hand-fabricated precious metal rings and ovals, with and without gemstones, that move freely in relationship to each other, dancing to the music of the body in motion.

This collection celebrates the singular beauty of one-of-a-kind pearls and boldly singular gemstones with settings created to highlight the unique nature of each. Nature's only gemstone grown by a living being, pearls are perhaps also a luminous metaphor for life: the accretion of beauty around the seed of experience and the transformation of an irritant into a thing of beauty. Mary ethically sources her Tahitian pearls directly from a small pearl farm in Tahiti that employs local people and utilizes green practices to grow, nourish and harvest pearls from its Pinctada margaritifera and Pinctada maxima oysters.
